Are you considering hiring an employee who wishes to work from abroad?

Working from abroad is becoming an increasingly common request among both new and existing employees at AU. Before entering into an agreement that allows an employee to work from abroad, it is important to be aware that such arrangements may have significant administrative and financial implications for the department.

Working from abroad can lead to additional costs and obligations related to taxation, social security, insurance, and potentially travel and accommodation expenses. In addition, the administrative processing of these arrangements can be both complex and time-consuming.

We encourage hiring managers and supervisors to carefully assess the need before committing to any work-from-abroad arrangement.

No agreements may be made with employees without prior approval from the Head of Department.

If you are unsure about the rules or the potential implications in a specific case, we recommend contacting HR. You are also welcome to contact the Secretariat, and we will help direct you to the relevant support.
